Rampant genetic modification technology poses an existential threat to planet earth and the human race, according to consumer activist Jeffrey M. Smith, author of "Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating" and "Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives." His latest initiative goes beyond glyphosate and Roundup-ready crops; he’s now taking aim at the ill-advised technology that threatens to introduce genetically-modified organisms into our ecosystems, threatening widespread disruption of nature. Altered viruses, bacteria, insects, crops, and fish like the GMO salmon are being developed without regard to the potentially dire consequences. The probable origin of the coronavirus via gain-of-function research highlights the hazards of inadvertent release. Industry has poured dark money into influencing scientists, medical journals, politicians, websites, and the media to downplay the hazards they pose. Smith is spearheading an initiative to get consumers to buy organic, but also to urge legislators to enact regulations to roll back hacking of normal biological evolution. Dr. Michelle Perro is an award-winning pediatrician and integrative physician, co-author of "What’s Making Our Children Sick: How Industrial Food is Causing an Epidemic of Illness." She explains how the advent of genetically-modified foods can undermine health—via diverse pathways. First, there are the unforeseen consequences on the human body of consuming novel foreign proteins; then, there are the adverse effects of herbicides like glyphosate that GMO crops facilitate. Of particular concern is the effect of GMOs on the microbiome which a key determinant of metabolic, neurotransmitter, and immune status. Newer technologies like CRISPR are touted as breakthroughs but they may have inadvertent downsides. Dr. Perro is an advocate of the precautionary principle when it comes to food innovations; she offers tips on how consumers can avoid consumption of GMOs. Gillam is an investigative journalist whose passion for the truth led her to disturbing conclusions about the herbicide glyphosate, widely used on “Round-Up Ready” crops. It’s maker Monsanto—now Bayer—is facing multiple lawsuits by plaintiffs claiming Roundup caused their cancers. Particularly disturbing are cases of rare aggressive variants of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma among agricultural workers. Gillam found herself vilified and delegitimized after calling out the dangers of glyphosate; the agribusiness industry has powerful allies in government, the media, in regulatory agencies and has infiltrated academic circles. How pervasive is glyphosate in our environment, in our food supply, in our bloodstreams, even in breast milk?
