ENCORE: The Modern Epidemic of Dehydration, Part 1
June 25, 2020
There’s more to optimal hydration than just gulping 8 glasses of water per day. In her new book "Quench: Beat Fatigue, Drop Weight, and Heal Your Body Through the New Science of Optimum Hydration," Dr. Dana Cohen, a New York City Integrative MD, outlines a comprehensive lifestyle approach to addressing what she terms a modern epidemic of dehydration. What are the signs you may need more fluids? What factors promote dehydration? Caffeine? Alcohol? Medications? What lessons can we learn from desert cultures? Doesn’t thirst provide us with adequate feedback about our hydration status? Why should we take a pre-emptive approach to fluid depletion? How do the latest physics findings about the properties of water molecules inform our choices about preferable ways to re-hydrate? What is “structured water”? Are “oxygenated water”, “alkaline water”, “ionized water”, “hydrogen water” and “Smart Water” just marketing hype? What’s wrong with the science behind sports drinks? Is carbonated water harmful? How can you economically obtain the benefits of water in its most biologically active form with natural foods? Dr. Cohen shares case studies of how her patients have reversed chronic ailments with her “5–Day Quench Plan”. Click HERE for part 2.

The Lessons of COVID-19, Part 1
June 18, 2020
Dr. Stephen Sinatra, www.healthydirections.com, America’s pre-eminent integrative cardiologist, weighs in on the lessons of COVID-19. It’s a call-to-action to optimize our health. While no supplements have yet been conclusively demonstrated to prevent or treat the coronavirus, there are plausible nutrients that can support immunity and reduce inflammation. Particularly concerning are reports that COVID-19 can affect the heart; there are disturbing accounts of strokes in relatively young individuals not considered in high-risk categories. Dr. Sinatra weighs in on the hydroxychloroquine controversy. He shares the results of studies he’s undertaken on the practice of “earthing” and on the effects of emotional release techniques. We reflect on the mental health consequences of prolonged lockdown. Click HERE for part 2.

Supplementation for Cardiovascular Health, Part 1
June 16, 2020
The cardiovascular system can be divided into three main components: the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries), and blood. Each element of this triad has to constantly be at its best to allow the entire system to function properly and to ensure that each cell of the body receives the oxygen and nutrients it needs to thrive, as well as unload the by-products of normal cellular respiration such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and other metabolic by-products. Dr. Neil Levin, Senior Nutrition Education Manager and a product formulator for NOW(r) Foods and Protocol for Life Balance, details the benefits of three compounds, each acting at a different level of the cardiovascular system: menaquinone-7 (MK-7), ubiquinol, and nattokinase. ENCORE: Media Distortion and Deception Against Supplements, Part 1
June 11, 2020
A recent study was widely reported by the media as demonstrating that “most vitamins are ineffective." Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, author of numerous books including "From Fatigued to Fantastic," "Pain-Free 1-2-3," and his latest, "Diabetes is Optional," weighs in with a critique. He says it’s part of a larger problem of media distortion and deception. His suggestion: Tune out, and look for more reliable sources of information. The study in question could actually be interpreted as support for supplements for cardiovascular disease prevention because folic acid and B12 reduced the risk of stroke. Teitelbaum critiques the use of cheap, generic multivitamins in the study. It didn’t look at natural broad-spectrum mixed tocopherols or carotenoids, and it ignored the role that significant amounts of magnesium, vitamin K, or vitamin D might play in prevention. He then outlines a more comprehensive approach for consumers to adopt to obtain balanced health information. His new favorite botanical for diabetes prevention and treatment: Hintonia Latiflora.
