ENCORE: Is fish oil the remedy for traumatic brain injury (TBI)? Part 1
September 6, 2018
Dr. Michael Lewis, Retired U.S. Army Colonel, West Point Graduate, and former military physician, is the founder of the Brain Health Education Research Institute. He says that hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer head injuries annually. Some suffer long-term consequences: dizziness, disorientation, headaches, loss of concentration and memory, mood changes, insomnia and fatigue. Even hormones can be thrown out of whack. The medical profession has little to offer these patients. How do you know whether you’ve suffered a concussion? How does high-dose fish oil quell inflammation? What’s the specific protocol for head injuries? Is there any danger of brain hemorrhage with such high doses? Can Dr. Lewis' Omega 3 head injury protocol be employed for patients in deep comas? Should athletes and military personnel at risk for head injuries take fish oil preventively? What’s been the response of the VA Hospital system to Dr. Lewis’ potentially cost-saving proposals? What other supplements might play a role in combatting the effects of TBI? (Listeners can request a free sample of Nordic Naturals Fish Oil which meets Dr. Lewis’ exacting specifications, by visiting Nordic Naturals' web site and clicking on the free sample box in the lower right corner.) ENCORE: Macular Degeneration, Part 1
September 4, 2018
Macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of blindness for American seniors. AMD is also one of the few medical conditions where nutritional therapy remains the mainstay of treatment, in the absence of drug “fixes.” Dr. Thomas Guilliams explains why antioxidants, Omega 3 fatty acids, and carotenoids are logical choices for preventing or slowing the progression of AMD; Is there evidence that healthy diets confer protection against AMD? What about exercise? What’s the difference between “wet” and “dry” AMD? Why are free radicals such a problem for the eye? What role does DHA play in eye health? How do lutein and zeaxanthin act like “internal sunglasses” in the eyes? What are main dietary sources of lutein and zeaxanthin? What are some of the controversies in eye research? What nutrients at what doses should the ideal eye supplement contain? Are additional benefits to be had from the addition of taurine, l-carnitine, n-acetylcysteine (NAC), quercetin, or sulforaphane? Click HERE for part 2.

Vaccine Rights, Part 1
August 28, 2018
Alan Phillips, Esq., is a North Carolina attorney who went to law school expressly to represent the rights of individuals to exercise freedom of choice for immunizations. He is America’s foremost vaccine rights attorney. He is the author of the e-book, "The Authoritative Guide to Vaccine Rights." What types of vaccine exemptions exist? Why should citizens be given a choice about vaccines that are said to protect the public good by conferring “herd immunity”? Phillips himself is being targeted by the North Carolina bar for upholding clients’ legal prerogative to question vaccine orthodoxy. Isn’t it all about freedom of choice in healthcare? Support his cause at https://www.change.org/p/no-attorney-is-above-the-law. Click HERE for part 2.

ENCORE: The Truth About Statins, Part 1
August 21, 2018
The Truth About Statins: Risks and Alternatives to Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs. Cardiologist Barbara Roberts, M.D. dishes on the exaggerated benefits and underplayed risks of statins. One in 4 U.S. adults aged 40-75 takes these cholesterol-lowering drugs. Dr. Roberts asserts that the American Heart Association, which wholeheartedly endorses statins, is merely a marketing arm of the pharmaceutical industry. Statin side effects include muscle aches, liver problems, cognitive decline, fatigue, cataracts, and a markedly higher risk of diabetes, especially in women. Reported benefits of statins are hyped with statistical manipulation and publication bias. Drugs that “halve the risk of heart problems” may only confer a 1% reduction in absolute risk with use over five years. Scores and sometimes hundreds of patients need to take statins unnecessarily with their accompanying side effects to save a single patient from heart attack or death. Yet, the indications for statin use have been extended to encompass millions more “at risk” Americans according to new, dubious criteria. Dr. Roberts argues that, while a small percentage of patients need statins, the vast majority of people can favorably impact their risk with a Mediterranean diet and exercise. For some groups, particularly older Americans and most women, statins are of minimal benefit and may be downright harmful. Studies show that low cholesterol is associated with higher risk of death among seniors—which is bad news for the new raft of PSK-9 lipid drugs currently under consideration for approval that lower cholesterol even more dramatically than statins. ENCORE: Unlocking Your Personal Genetic Code, Part 1
August 16, 2018
"The DNA Restart," by Dr. Sharon Moalem, aims to help to “unlock your personal genetic code to eat for your genes, lose weight and reverse aging;" How does “epigenetics” shape the expression of our genes? Can you overcome genetic faults through lifestyle modification? Nutrigenomics is the science of predicting what diet a person should be on based on genetic analysis—are genetic home tests that tell you what diet to follow not yet ready for primetime? Dr. Moalem shares some functional tests that readers can easily perform at home: the “cracker test;” the "ear wax test;” Dr. Moalem is also the author of a previous book “Survival of the Sickest” which explains how some seemingly bad genes help to protect us; What is “umami” and how can it be harnessed to keep us from over-eating? What crucial culinary tip helps to harness the benefits of garlic? Why does Dr. Moalem favor Oolong tea? How can a low-cholesterol diet sometimes backfire and result in higher cholesterol? How do exercise and sleep help us maximize our genetic potential? Click HERE for part 2.
