Leyla Weighs In: Medical management or nutritional cure?

Ask yourself: Do you simply want to take a prescription to manage your symptoms, or seek out the root cause of your trouble to effectively treat and eradicate it? For example, do you want to manage your type 2 diabetes, PCOS and ensuing infertility, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, SIBO, GERD, or do you want to effectively treat it, moving toward a real and sustainable cure? By the way, this is just a short list of conditions—and yes, I said cure.

The trouble with taking prescription medications is the side effects, as many who come to see me have attested. Or they feel they’re not being helped at all with the current pharmaceuticals they’re on. Or maybe they had some relief when they started their prescription, only to find it was just a honeymoon period and ailments have crept back.

A symptom is like a message. You want to heed it—whether it’s pain, inflammation, fatigue, GI issues, etc. It’s showing you something is happening in your body and for you to pay attention to it. Why then, in our current medical system, do we suppress symptoms with meds and then carry on like the problem is solved? It isn’t.

The symptom itself isn’t the root cause of the condition or disease. Yes, we want to take an aspirin or other analgesic for the pain (for example a headache or body aches), or something to immediately relieve indigestion or reflux. But if the discomfort becomes chronic, you don’t just want to live on pain relievers, powerful migraine meds, or proton pump inhibitors. You want to uncover the source of the malady and remedy THAT.

Medical Nutrition Therapy addresses and tackles the root causes of symptoms. MNT works with your body, via therapeutic diet and appropriate supplementation, to support your body’s natural and resilient ability to heal itself

You have an opportunity to bring true health and longevity into your life, not just the chronic management of symptoms and disease. A qualified nutritionist can help you navigate your health journey.

To your health!

Cocoa is one of the most thoroughly-investigated functional foods on the planet. That’s why I take plentiful, flavanol-rich cocoa supplementation daily and have long recommended it to my patients and audience. But just taking any store-bought dark chocolate won’t deliver its benefits; FlavaNaturals cocoa products contain 5-9 times the beneficial flavanols of typical dark chocolate. I throw some powder in with my decaf or a smoothie, and even use it to make chia chocolate pudding!
