ENCORE: The Deplorable State of Nutrition Science, Part 1 April 8, 2021 Dr. Richard Feinman is one of the deans of the low-carb movement. He is Professor of Cell Biology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center where he teaches medical students, and is author of "Nutrition in Crisis: Flawed Studies, Misleading Advice, and the Real Science of Human Metabolism." He takes aim at the deplorable state of nutrition science. Especially problematic are epidemiological studies which draw unwarranted inferences about what people should eat. Feinman challenges the “Diet-Heart Hypothesis” which he says has never been substantiated. He is author of an authoritative review supporting carbohydrate restriction as a means of controlling diabetes. His recent work is on ketogenic diets for cancer. Feinman describes the intense resistance his iconoclastic views have met within the nutrition establishment, but believes that low-carb dieting is engendering a paradigm switch. ENCORE: Is Your Metabolism Stuck? Part 1 February 24, 2021 Ann Louise Gittleman, author of "Radical Metabolism," explains why people get “stuck” with impaired metabolism. She shares a novel take on the role of the gallbladder in detoxification; impaired gall bladder function—or its removal—hampers a key pathway for optimal metabolism. Ann Louise is a fan of coffee, hibiscus and oolong tea, bone broth, and a concoction she has named “Citrus Blaster”. She has devised a 4-Day Radical Intensive Cleanse and a 21-Day Radical Reboot. She shares her journey from Director of Nutrition of the low-fat, quasi-vegan Pritikin Institute to her current advocacy of low-carb dieting with ample amounts of healthy fat—but issues some cautions about the Paleo and Keto diet paradigms. Artificial sweeteners are out—but certain natural sweeteners have a place in Ann Louise’s paradigm. She shares her top supplements—including glycine, l-glutamine, and astaxanthin. ENCORE: Fending Off Neurodegenerative Diseases, Part 1 January 27, 2021 Board-certified neurologist, Dr. Phillipe Douyon, creator of the BrainFit™️ app, joins us to talk about ways to support brain health and fend off neurodegenerative disease. We needn’t be resigned to progressive loss of brain function with aging, because new findings about neuroplasticity reveal that the brain can remodel and rejuvenate itself, actually regenerating brain cells and neural circuits. Dr. Douyon reveals why, with the limited success of drugs for conditions like Parkinson’s and ALS, we need to invoke a comprehensive lifestyle program to address brain health. This comprises sleep, stress reduction, exercise, social connection, avoidance of toxins, and diet. Even poor dental hygiene may influence brain health. Among the supplements that are helpful are fish oil, curcumin, B vitamins and antioxidants like alpha lipoic acid. Dr. Douyon, who specializes in the treatment of epilepsy reveals the role of ketogenic diets in patients who don’t respond to conventional treatment? Are refined carbs and gluten really potentially harmful to the brain? What role for the microbiome in brain health? Which drugs are memory robbers? Can statins have harmful effects on the brain?
