ENCORE: Why avoid GMOs? Part 1
May 24, 2022
Dr. Michelle Perro is an award-winning pediatrician and integrative physician, co-author of "What’s Making Our Children Sick: How Industrial Food is Causing an Epidemic of Illness." She explains how the advent of genetically-modified foods can undermine health—via diverse pathways. First, there are the unforeseen consequences on the human body of consuming novel foreign proteins; then, there are the adverse effects of herbicides like glyphosate that GMO crops facilitate. Of particular concern is the effect of GMOs on the microbiome which a key determinant of metabolic, neurotransmitter, and immune status. Newer technologies like CRISPR are touted as breakthroughs but they may have inadvertent downsides. Dr. Perro is an advocate of the precautionary principle when it comes to food innovations; she offers tips on how consumers can avoid consumption of GMOs. She calls for a revolution in food production and distribution, and a return to safer and more sustainable models of regenerative agriculture. Click HERE for part 2.

The Estrobolome’s Role in Hormone Balance, Part 1
May 19, 2022
More and more consumers are aware of probiotics, but most of them think of their importance as being only for digestive health. Some have made the connection between probiotics, a healthy gut, and immune health, but there are other health areas that they positively affect as well. We now have research that points to the importance of a healthy gut microbiome for optimal function throughout the body, including hormone balance. There is an aspect of the microbiome called the ‘estrobolome’ that is uniquely in charge of managing hormone production and detoxification; without a healthy gut, hormone health will not be optimal. Naturopathic physician and integrative practitioner Dr. Aimée Shunney details the estrobolome’s role in managing hormone production and detoxification. She describes the estrobolome as a collection of bacteria in the gut which is capable of metabolizing and modulating the body's circulating estrogen. It is the bacteria in the gut, and the estrobolome, that affect estrogen levels. Click HERE for part 2.

The “Swedish Experiment” During Covid, Part 1
May 17, 2022
Investigative journalist Johan Anderberg has written an account of Sweden’s response to Covid, "The Herd, How Sweden Chose Its Own Path Through the Worst Pandemic in 100 Years." The insights he gained have profound implications for our own public health strategies going forward. Sweden was heavily criticized for taking a relatively lax approach to school and business closures, compulsory masking and social distancing. Their health officials weighed the evidence, and decided on less stringent measures. After initial alarm at their high death rates, cases leveled off, and now Sweden boasts one of the lowest excess mortality statistics in Europe. Is allowing herd immunity to take effect the key to their success? Is there something about the Swedish lifestyle—adherence to a Nordic diet and lots of physical activity—that renders their population less vulnerable? Additionally, the Swedish economy took less of a hit, and their mental health—especially of young people—has been less impaired. According to Anderberg, Swedes wonder, after all the Sweden-bashing that took place in the U.S. and U.K. media early in the pandemic, why health journalists in those countries haven’t taken the time to re-examine their staunch advocacy for strict lockdown, distancing, and masking strategies. ACTION ALERT: The Feds Are Coming For Your Supplements, Part 1
May 10, 2022
Access to supplements is once again under threat. A new Congressional initiative calls for “registration” of all nutritional supplements, a burdensome requirement that is likely to enable FDA to prohibit certain dosages and ingredients. Gretchen Dubeau, Executive Director of the Alliance for Natural Health briefs us on the implications. Large supplement makers owned by pharmaceutical companies are on board, as they’re already equipped to deal with the FDA’s bureaucracy; smaller nimble companies that produce innovative products will be driven to raise prices or go under. You say it can’t happen here? Think again, as U.S. regulators seek to “harmonize” with Europe which already outlaws many supplements, or limits their potency to meaningless levels. Learn more here via this ACTION ALERT, and register your protest to Congress to kill the bills! Click HERE for part 2.
