The Potential for Benfotiamine and High-Dose Vitamin B One in Neurodegenerative Disorders, Part 1

Dr. Richard Mann is a podiatrist who specializes in dealing with nerve problems of the foot. A chance encounter with a patient who improved after taking a vitamin B1 supplement called benfotiamine led him to explore the potential of this nutrient. It’s long been noted that deficiencies of thiamin are associated with nerve problems; in malnourished alcoholics it can lead to a severe brain disorder called Wernicke’s encephalopathy, reversible with thiamin. This has led Dr. Mann to explore the potential for benfotiamine to address neurodegenerative disorders. He recently published a scientific paper in the journal Cureus detailing a case study of a patient with ALS who improved with benfotiamine administration. This is not to claim a breakthrough “cure” for Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s or ALS, but suggests a possible avenue for nutritional intervention that might slow the onslaught of these diseases in the absence of definitive conventional therapies.
