March 27, 2024
Stress is ubiquitous and has many manifestations. Naturopathic physician Dr. Doni Wilson has a new book, "Master Your Stress, Reset Your Health: The Personalized Program to Calm Anxiety, Boost Energy, and Beat Burnout," that details individualized approaches to stress adaptation. She characterizes 5 different stress types, based on variations in cortisol and adrenaline responses. Each entails a specific program of lifestyle and supplementation. We discuss the roles of genetics, diet, relaxation techniques, sleep, Adaptogens, vitamins and minerals, and exercise in stress reactions. A one-size-fits-all approach falls short. A Comprehensive Strategy for Menopause, Part 1
January 31, 2023
There’s apprehension about the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR)—are we about to enter the dystopian future world of The Matrix? But today’s guest, Dr. Joseph Feuerstein, discusses the innovative application of AI and VR to a common problem: menopausal hot flashes in women for whom estrogen is contraindicated because of the risk of cancer. Using a VR headset, menopausal women were presented guided imagery featuring cooling and relaxing suggestions. A pilot study showed it reduced the frequency and intensity of hot flashes, improved sleep quality, and enhanced overall well-being. Dr. Feuerstein discusses a comprehensive strategy for menopause, comprising acupuncture, natural products (Estrovera and Relizen), exercise and diet. Are soy isoflavones OK for relieving menopausal symptoms, even in breast cancer patients? Dr. Feuerstein is also co-author of "The Cannabinoid Cookbook," which is not merely a guidebook to marijuana edibles; instead, it focuses on the numerous foods that support the body’s endocannabinoid system—Including cocoa, omega-3 fatty acids, turmeric, and truffles. These foods deliver compounds which confer a multiplicity of mood and anti-inflammatory benefits. Click HERE for part 2.

The Estrobolome’s Role in Hormone Balance, Part 1
May 19, 2022
More and more consumers are aware of probiotics, but most of them think of their importance as being only for digestive health. Some have made the connection between probiotics, a healthy gut, and immune health, but there are other health areas that they positively affect as well. We now have research that points to the importance of a healthy gut microbiome for optimal function throughout the body, including hormone balance. There is an aspect of the microbiome called the ‘estrobolome’ that is uniquely in charge of managing hormone production and detoxification; without a healthy gut, hormone health will not be optimal. Naturopathic physician and integrative practitioner Dr. Aimée Shunney details the estrobolome’s role in managing hormone production and detoxification. She describes the estrobolome as a collection of bacteria in the gut which is capable of metabolizing and modulating the body's circulating estrogen. It is the bacteria in the gut, and the estrobolome, that affect estrogen levels. Click HERE for part 2.
