Ask Leyla: What time of day should I exercise?

Q: Does it matter what time of day I exercise? What time is ideal for getting the most out of my workouts?

A: It almost goes without saying, but the benefits of exercise are profound. The best time of day to exercise is when you will consistently devote time to it. In other words, exercise itself is more important than when you actually do it. Choose the time that’s right for you. For example, if you’re least motivated in the morning, choose a different time of day. If you’re more motivated in the afternoon or early evening, go for it. Keep in mind however, that exercising too late in the evening may make it difficult to fall asleep come bedtime.

The benefit of exercising in the morning before breakfast is burning more fat by kickstarting metabolism to burn more calories, compared to later in the day. Some evidence suggests it may be beneficial for blood pressure and promoting deeper sleep. It also helps to boost mental alertness. However, if it just doesn’t suit your lifestyle, or you feel too cold or stiff in the morning, it’s fine to exercise later in the day. Many retirees, for example, enjoy exercise in the late morning

Don’t fret if you’re not a morning person. There is evidence that suggests that when it comes to strength training, doing it later in day may be advantageous for muscle retention, endurance and peak performance. Researchers observed that participants benefitted from having more strength and power in the mid to late afternoon likely boosted by improved hydration and calorie status by mid-day. For many, it’s simply that they’re more awake and energetic in the afternoon.

Remember, the best time of day for exercise is the time of day that you commit to doing it.

To your health!
