How to Maintain a Healthy Immune Response, Part 1
July 16, 2020
As important as it is to quarantine and "hide" from the coronavirus, it's important to know that too much hiding can put you at greater risk. Without gyms to exercise in and farmers' markets to buy fresh healthy produce (or sunlight, itself), Americans have adopted an unhealthy COVID-19 lifestyle - often marked by stress-eating comfort food and binge-watching reality TV from the couch. While safer from the virus, too much of this behavior could lead to a host of side effects that actually make you less healthy than if you were living your normal life amid the pandemic. It's something that's important to consider as our fitness centers and recreational opportunities open back up and Americans have a daunting choice to make about re-entry. Dr. Mark Engelman is an expert in immunology and offers insights into how to maintain a balanced immune response. He’s Director of Clinical Consulting for Cyrex Laboratories, which specializes in immune profiling. He discusses how the immune system responds to viruses; what lifestyle factors promote an appropriate—and not overactive—immune response; which nutrients are particularly germane to COVID-19, pitfalls in testing for coronavirus; the role of the gut in determining optimal immunity; and why autoimmunity is so prevalent. ENCORE: Patient Empowerment, Part 1
July 9, 2020
Dr. William Davis, author of the best-seller “Wheat Belly,” argues for patient empowerment in a new book, “Undoctored: Why Healthcare Has Failed You and How You Can Become Smarter Than Your Doctor." Dr. Davis tells the story of his transformation from a successful interventional cardiologist to an outspoken critic of medical orthodoxy; Why does he urge people to eschew not only wheat, but all grain products? What’s wrong with gluten-free baked goods? Why take issue with mainstream nutritionists who urge “moderation”? What’s meant by “undoctoring”? Why has the term “healthcare” become an oxymoron? Why is cholesterol oversold as a predictor of heart risk? Can heart disease be managed without statins? Are coronary stents overdone? Dr. Davis highlights the benefits of a unique probiotic—lactobacillus reuteri—and offers a recipe for a gut-repleting yogurt that restores youthful appearance, strengthens bones, and combats muscle wasting. What role for dietary supplements? For exercise? Why follow Dr. Davis’ call to become an “unpatient”? Click HERE for part 2.

Report From the Frontlines of COVID-19, Part 1
July 2, 2020
Dr. Jaime Salas-Rushford reports from the frontlines of COVID-19 treatment at one of New York’s hardest-hit hospitals. He’s an integrative physician who serves as Medical Director of FITbodymd Medicine in Puerto Rico, but responded to the call to treat patients during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in New York City. He reflects on the lessons learned: Ventilators are overused; hydroxychloroquine seems to have helped; patients with COVID-19 need basic inexpensive supportive care, administered promptly; vitamin C and zinc were liberally used in the hospital. He also notes that patients who take supplements regularly seemed to fare better. As the author of "Fight Colds, Flu and Other Infections with AHCC," he’s convinced of its efficacy in supporting immunity. Dr. Salas-Rushford claims “COVID-19 was an eye-opener” and we need to learn from it to cultivate resilience to weather future challenges. He says the pandemic has revealed the vulnerabilities of our health care system, which needs more emphasis on old-fashioned primary care, and a restoration of the doctor-patient relationship. Dr. Salas-Rushford is currently advising businesses in New York City on how to safely reopen; he’s concerned that excessive restrictions will irrevocably damage the economy and affect the livelihoods of Americans, with devastating effects on their mental and physical well-being.
